Number 14

Hana’s team wore blue. In the kit bag there was a spare blue jersey, still folded. A pin held a small card to the collar: 14. At the start of the game Coach said the spare was only for a player who had come with no jersey. Every player had one. The spare stayed in the bag.

In the second half Hana’s boot split. The sole flapped when she ran. Coach waved her to the bench. She watched the rest of the game in her socks. Nobody brought her the spare jersey.

When the game was over, Coach held out number 14.

“This is not for today,” he said. “Your boot is finished. Saturday’s game is the one that matters. If those boots cannot stay on your feet, you cannot take the field. The jersey means the place is still yours until Saturday. Bring boots that work, and you give this back.”

Hana did not put it on. She laid it in her bag, on top of the split boot, and zipped the bag shut.

  1. 1. Why was the spare jersey still in the bag at half-time?

  2. 2. Why did Hana leave the field?

  3. 3. Why did Coach give her the jersey after the game?

  4. 4. What does laying the jersey on top of the boot show?
